Are the people who complain about them the same people who distort their viewing on TV by putting it on ‘stretch’ so it fills the whole screen? The same ones who made 'pan and scan' a horrible thing so it was nearly impossible to get letterboxed movies outside of expensive ass laserdiscs for ages?

Don't get it.

I complain about them, I complain about streched videos and I complain about crappy ratios as well in general, not very hard to respect proportions AND the general position of a monitor/TV. People who complain about vertical videos are damn right to complain :)

If it were a composed shot meant to be viewed as an experience I'd be with you. As an adhoc method of capturing events as they happen I'm legitimately confused at the complaints...I wonder if youtube (or whatever hosting site) had a dynamic frame (both there and embedded) that would shape to the video if the complaints would be as loud.

Not defending, legitimately don't understand the ire.

I complain about them too. I also hate stretched video settings. No idea about laser disc, before my time.

My reason for complaing is that people have the tools and technology to do it right, but they still screw it up.

If this first of two examples of how to frame something doesn’t bother you, I can’t explain it.

Kinja'd!!!

I have nothing against FILMING portrait video, just keep it on your device, and no one gets hurt.

Yeah, I totally get the bitching on a particular video if it’s a set-up and composed shot where the framing misses parts of the action. When it’s an adhoc "oh shit, stuff's exploding lets capture this" (which is where most of the complaints are since that's what most cell phone video is) vertical is just as likely to capture what's needed amongst the shakiness and chaos...that's why I don't get the blanket bitching.

Even though I’m quite vocal vocal toward this bad habit, I sometimes catch myself thinking, “Well, at least we get to see this ________*”

The problem here, is that it is a bad habit. If their default orientation is portrait, then they are going to record these exclusive events in portrait.

I blame Apple for this. They could have easily disabled auto-rotate for recording/playback video, but chose not to.

If they would have disabled it:

Video playback would be full screen by default on your device, and you could rotate it however you wanted.

Everyone you shared the video with would write you back and tell you to stop filming sideways. The problem would police itself

*police beating, road rage, car accident, Olympic swimmer bong hits, etc...

Yeah, it certainly is a bad habit for videographers or even casually composed shots, no dispute. Just feels like the bitching to me is like bitching that some schmoe didn’t use the rule of thirds when taking photos of his kid’s swim meet on a cheapo 110 camera with a disposable flash back in the day. Also feels like the same bitching that screwed over home format movies forever (dur, black bars are dumb use full screen even if it loses parts of shot or distorts image).

Also, I realize I’m bitching about bitching which is one of the dumbest things to do.

I think people complain because it’s sooooooo easy to fix.

It’s not a cinematography or an equipment issue, it’s 100% “you’re holding it wrong and you shared it.”

As much as I wished they shot TV shows in 16:9 30 years ago, I can tolorate the sidebars on my Dukes of Hazzard reruns because at least they held the camera right. :)

But if they shot in 3:4 you would have gotten (slightly) more height in the shots of the jumps!
